Pikitup needs volunteers for contingency

Pikitup's waste collection crew need to secure the environment for late pickups, the entity said.

Pikitup is calling for volunteers in the security sector to assist them with waste collection in the late hours.

Their contingency plans to date have meant they’ve worked after hours and into the night to keep up with the waste collection demand while some employees are illegally striking. In a recent press release, the entity asked for assistance from the community in facilitating the delivery of waste management to the city and its extensions.

“The intervention will complement Pikitup’s waste collection crew and security team which aim to clear illegal dumping and refuse collection in a safe environment,” Pikitup spokesperson Jacky Mashapu said.

The request follows reports last week of bullets being fired at a Pikitup truck during their overnight shift near Nasrec in the south of Johannesburg.
