Pikitup: CoJ again calls for Samwu to resume talks

City of Johannesburg calls for Samwu to resume talks as Pikitup employees are disciplined.

Pikitup welcomes the City of Johannesburg’s recent call for the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) to resume engagement with the entity.

This while disciplinary hearings in terms of Pikitup employees ignoring the two court interdicts it obtained and ultimatums it issued is set to commence today, Tuesday 29 March.

According to its official spokesperson, Jacky Mashapu, Pikitup is ready to welcome employees back to work today, should they wish to return.

“Employees returning would serve to give further impetus to the recovery plan being implemented by Pikitup,” Mashapu in a press statement said.

Pikitup needs volunteers for contingency 

In terms of the disciplinary process to follow, Mashapu added, “charges have also been levelled at those who have provoked the illegal strike and individuals who have been responsible for intimidation”.

It is expected disciplinary hearings will last for the following three days, he said.

In the mean time Pikitup and various other municipal entities tackled backlogs around the city over Easter weekend.

“The affected areas are being reviewed and monitored on an ongoing basis to ensure cleanliness is restored to optimum levels,” Mashapu said.

He reiterated Pikitup’s call to the community to continue supporting the entity by dropping off waste at their nearest, approved garden refuse or landfill sites.
