Fix it today, empower them tomorrow

Saeed Abrahams has big plans in store for Florida North and surrounding areas.

Once you fix an unoccupied property into a skills development centre, you’ll have the facilities to empower people for a lifetime.

That’s how Saeed Abrahams argues it. He registered the Saeed Foundation earlier this year, but has been helping the communities of Westbury, Sophiatown and Newclare unofficially for around three years. The object of the foundation is to raise funds with which to do community outreach programmes. The biggest part of his vision, though, is to redevelop an unoccupied property in Koppie Street into a skills development centre, so he can help people help themselves. This property has generously been donated to them.

Abrahams owns an electrical and building contractors business in Florida North, and has also founded Saeed Abrahams Productions and Events in 2012. This company he uses to organise events through which he does fundraising for the foundation. His right hand and equal in charity work is his wife, Salama and his trusty sidekick is his personal assistant, Layaan Fakier.

The foundation has to date managed a successful media partnership with KofifiFM. Last year, the events company helped hosting the KofifiFM Pageant at the Linder Auditorium in Johannesburg, with celebrity judges Shaleen Surtie-Richards and Miss Commonwealth 2015 Janine Kamaar. Girls from underprivileged areas west of Johannesburg participated, and had their time to shine.

Their eye is on turning the unoccupied house and garage on the donated property into a skills development centre where classes in repairs, electrical work, baking, beauty and clothing will be given, Fakier said while taking the Record on a tour of the house. The goal is to get the centre accredited with the Sector Education and Training Authority (Seta).

Although they have many events planned for the year ahead, which should bring in money towards repairing and equipping the to-be centre, they’re appealing to the community and businessmen in the area to assist them.

A lot is yet to be done, but big results start with a small dream, Abrahams said.
