“To prevent motion sickness misery, eat light meals before you set off. Avoid fatty, spicy or heavy foods. Keep a ready supply of water and padkos available, including light snacks such as crackers and fruit. It is also best to sit where you’ll feel the least movement such as in the front seat, middle of the boat or next to the wing of an aeroplane,” explained Williams.

She advised parents to place their child’s car seat facing forward and high enough so that they can look out. Opening a window may help unless there are unpleasant odours such as petrol or exhaust fumes that may cause nausea. A helpful solution, Williams advocates are acupressure wristbands and copper bracelets that are said to help.

“Some people believe ginger and mint helps. Trip Ease which is a homeopathic remedy is also available over the counter at Dis-Chem. For really severe cases consult a doctor or pharmacist as there are medications available,” concluded Williams.
