New MD to kick JRA into gear

Johannesburg Roads Agency hires new managing director after Mpho Kau's year as acting director.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) was excited to announce the new phase its entering after appointing a new managing director (MD) last week.

The new MD is Dr Sean Phillips who will assume his position as head of the entity on 1 May.

The board appointed him after a rigorous selection process from an outstanding list of candidates. Dr Phillips is a civil engineering professional reported to have strong performance monitoring skills and evaluation experience at both national and municipal levels. He also boasts with operational management expertise with local roads authorities.

JRA spokesperson Bertha Scheepers said Dr Phillips has held the CEO position at the Municipal Infrastructure Support Agent, a government component in the national Department of Cooperative Governance. He was also the Director-General of the Department of Performance Monitoring and Evaluation in the Presidency. He previous held various positions within the private and public sector, including the public works environment.

“This is a very exciting new phase of the City’s journey in roads infrastructure; Dr Phillips’ vast experience and skills will serve the City and the JRA well in our commitment to providing quality roads that are safe and accessible for our community,” Scheepers said.

In her recent press statement Scheepers also acknowledged Mpho Kau’s leadership as acting managing director over the past year. Under Kau, the entity achieved a clean unqualified audit for the second consecutive year and strengthened its turnaround strategy. Kau will resume his position as executive head of infrastructure development.

Dr Phillips holds a Master of Management Degree (Cum Laude), a Doctorate in Civil Engineering and a Master of Science, all three which he obtained from the University of Witwatersrand (Wits).
