Pupils come together to form United Schools of the West

High school brought together four high schools from the West Rand to form the United Schools of the West.

The pupil representatives from Hoërskool Die Adelaar, Tulip High School, Florida Park High School and West Ridge High School attended the official launch of the coalition.

The aim of the schools is to work together by having unity among the schools, to decrease the socio-economic problems that exist in the status quo, having tournaments and programmes running throughout the year within these neighbouring schools.

Princess High School’s leader Mbalenhle Mkhiti was ecstatic at the turnout of the event and outlined her plans for this new coalition between the schools.

“I’ve had this dream since last year and once I was elected to become a part of the pupils representative council, I could implement this idea. As schools in the West Rand, we need to unite and work together. I have noticed that pupils from different schools never really get along and are always participating in activities separately but we uniting will help remedy this. Our aim is having great extra mural relations while enriching the pupils under our leadership,” she said.

Some of the programmes that are planned include chess, poetry, public speaking and story skirmish.

Representatives from the Roodepoort Police and Crime Stop’s Lieutenant-Colonel Eugene Rossouw were invited to the event.

“We want to keep school pupils away from drugs and other illegal activities so we are here to work together with the learner council to forge a better path. As Social Crime Prevention and Crime Stop, we work together with the schools and support them. However, the pupils need to come forward if they find a situation occurring at school which can bring harm to them and their fellow pupils,” said Rossouw.
