Video: Metro cops in scuffle with motorist again

Metro Police tries to force man into admitting guilt.

Metro Police once again got physical. This time with a motorist in Maraisburg yesterday (17 March).

This follows in the wake of officers assaulting a motorist in Midrand on Wednesday.

According to Adiel Alexander he arrived at his home on 6th Street at around 8am. He put on his indicator to turn right into his driveway when a speeding taxi passed him on the right-hand side and crashed into him. The taxi had a photo-copied licence disc and the driver could not produce a driver’s licence.

Alexander phoned Metro Police but they only arrived two hours later. The taxi driver who had left the scene returned minutes after Metro Police arrived.

“I believe he knew these cops,” said Alexander.

Then the situation spiraled out of control. Metro Police members insisted that Alexander admit guilt and when he refused they started shouting at him. His uncle heard the commotion outside and when police started pushing his nephew around he went to assist him.

The officers then ordered Alexander to get into their vehicle but he refused, insisting he was not guilty to any crime. They confiscated his vehicle and told him if he wanted it back he could go and pay R4 000 at the pound. They gave him no documentation for impounding the vehicle.

According to Alexander they never questioned the taxi driver.

Despite the officers repeatedly telling a bystander to stop filming them, the incident was caught on camera.

Metro Police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said in any case where officers misbehave, the public can report it to the Internal Affairs Department on 011 490 1797.
