Pikitup intensifying its contingency efforts

Pikitup appealing to community to aid in waste management during the ongoing strike.

Pikitup is appealing to residents to aid the entity in waste collection while the illegal strike continues.

Their commitment to service delivery with less staff has been evident in late-night waste collection rounds over the past couple of days.

Last week, the Record reported the entity has taken a no-nonsense, ‘no work, no pay’ approach to the ongoing illegal strike by serving striking employees with pre-dismissal notices. Nineteen employees were also arested for damaging city assets and more arrests are expected.

Despite the interruptions, they advised residents and business owners to continue leaving wheeley bins outside as per their normal collection schedule. Spokesperson Jacky Mashapu said working employees are working into the night to catch up on waste not collected. This also enables the entity to continue its work with a smaller force and the aid of contractors.

On Friday 18 March, Mashapu said their contingency measures is to be intensified to counter the effects of service disruptions. He said the entity will make this move despite intimidation by some striking workers.

“It is important to note that, in certain instances, collection is done during the night and may continue in this manner until normal service resumes,” he said.

Mashapu also appealed to residents to aid the entity in waste management by recycling or dropping off waste at their nearest garden refuse sites.

“We appeal to communities to work with us in order to ensure the safety of these third-party contractors, while we work to resolve service delivery,” Mashapu concluded.
