VIDEO: Pupils sing and dance in the library

WELTEVREDEN PARK – Pupils learn the importance of reading and visiting the library.

The Weltevreden Park Library celebrated Library Week on 16 March by teaching children the importance of reading. The theme for the day was ‘Future Education’.

Librarian, Sandy Visser said that libraries are still a very important part of any community, as children cannot read anymore. “I am not discarding social media, but it causes our children to misspell,” said Visser. She further explained that they want to encourage children to visit the library and have a chance to feel a real book again. She added that the library however, will keep up with new technology.

“We will soon have Wi-Fi and then get computers so that people can come here and use the internet,” said Visser. She added that they might even get e-books if it will motivate people to read. “I love it when people visit our library and tell me that they still prefer reading books to e-books,” said Visser.

To celebrate Library Week, the Grade 1 and 2 pupils from Arrows of Destiny Christian Academy visited the library and were entertained by musician, Sam Weston. The librarians danced along with the children and encouraged them to sing while Weston accompanied them on guitar. Later, the little faces lit up when they were told about what the exciting holiday programme at the library included, such as an Easter egg hunt and craft making. The pupils then sat back and relaxed as stories were read to them.
