Pikitup employees served with pre-dismissal notices

'No work, no pay' says an adamant Pikitup.

Pikitup is acting on its no-nonsense ‘no work, no pay’ approach to the ongoing illegal strike by serving striking employees with pre-dismissal notices.

The South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) called for its members, who are Pikitup employees, to return to work on Friday 11 March, which many members have ignored. The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) and Pikitup’s board and management welcomes the national call, it said in a press statement this morning (Monday 14 March).

The entity spokesperson Jacky Mashapu said Pikitup is continuing to issue pre-dismissal notices, which it commenced after workers failed to return to work on Thursday.

The strike has seen damage to CoJ’s assets and 19 striking employees were arrested, of which 11 were released due to lack of evidence. The other eight will appear in court on charges of malicious damage to property and intimidation.

“More arrests are expected,” Mashapu in his statement said.

In terms of waste management in the mean time, he advises residents and business owners to take out refuse bins as per the normal collection schedule.

“Areas where bins were not collected on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday will be serviced as per the normal collection schedule.

“Collections will continue into the night and bins must therefore be left out during the night,” Mashapu said.

He reiterated CoJ’s and Pikitup’s apology to residents for the inconvenience caused.
