Scamster arrested at licensing station

Pro-active stance paying off.

Florida Police’s pro-active stance towards crime at the licensing station is paying off. Since it has become a hot spot for theft, police are monitoring the situation there closely.

Last Thursday at around 12.30pm Florida Police Crime Prevention Unit was patrolling along Westlake Avenue when they noticed a suspicious-looking man talking to an elderly man. It was apparent that there was some sort of commotion.

When the suspect saw the police vehicle, he moved away from the victim’s car, but police immediately confronted the two and questioned them.

The victim, a 79-year-old man, told police the suspect offered to assist him to have his licence renewed quickly. He requested an amount of R300 from the victim to avoid standing in a long queue. The officers ordered the suspect to give back the money to the victim but he told police he already had used R100 and only gave back R200.

A case of theft has been opened at Florida Police Station where the suspect, aged 31, was detained. He is due to appear in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court soon.
