Celebrate #LibraryWeek with no fines

Residents exempt from library fines during library week, city encourages #booklove

In celebration of South Africa Library Week, which runs from 11 to 21 March, the City of Johannesburg exempted residents from penalties on overdue books returned during a restricted period.

“You have the opportunity to return your overdue books with no penalties,” they said in a recent press statement.

Although Library Week ends on 21 March, residents will have time until 31 March to return overdue books and not face penalty charges.

“It’s a no-questions-asked deal,” the city said.

The theme for Library Week this year is #libraries4lifelonglearning, focusing on learning as a holistic activity occurring in different environments, and on both a formal and informal basis.

The Director of Library and Information Services, Nobuntu Mpendulo, was quoted saying, “Library Week aims to position libraries as spaces that provide our communities with learning resources in various formats, but also advance literacy, foster a spirit of enquiry and curiosity and create a desire for lifelong learning.”

Mpendulo said reading instills respect for diverse beliefs and opinions and is key in fostering an informed citizenry.

Mpendulo encourages residents to visit their libraries during this period and participate in special Library Week activities.
