Pikitup strike: Here’s how waste will be handled

Contingency plans put in place to deal with uncollected waste. More details here.

Pikitup condemns the unlawful strike action taken by its employees who belong to a union yesterday, and have acted quickly to provide a contingency plan for residents.

“The unlawful action taken by those employees who are members of the South African Municipal Workers Union is against the spirit of the ongoing engagement with Samwu and concessions that the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) and Pikitup have made to accommodate them,” spokesperson Jacky Mashapu in a recent press release said.

“Every effort is being made to speedily address this illegal work stoppage.”

Mashapu apologised on behalf of Pikitup for inconvenience caused to the public, and appealed to residents and business owners to continue leaving their bins and excess waste outside as a contingency plan is in place.

“Residents and business owners can also engage with the regional manager responsible for their area to access further information,” Mashapu said.
