First registration weekend in numbers

Have you registered to vote? First registration weekend successful, second to follow in April.

Over three million people visited their voting stations on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 March, officially Independendent Electoral Commission’s (IEC’s) first national registration weekend.

The Record broke the registration weekend down in numbers. Turnout to registration weekend was more than double what it was in the previous local elections in 2011, and increased with 23 per cent from the turnout at the first registration weekend for National and Provincial Elections in 2014.

Compared to the turnout at the first registration weekend in 2011 for local elections, 2016 saw 23 per cent more new registrations, 33 per cent more reregistrations in new voting districts and 89 per cent more people visiting to check and update their registration details.

Of the 3 097 194 people who visited voting stations, 22 per cent were new registrations, 35 per cent were re-registrations in different voting districts and 43 per cent were people visiting to confirm and/ or update their registration details.

Nationally, 78.6 per cent of new registrations were under 30-years-old, meaning the youth responded greatly to the call to register widely published and advertised. More than half (54 per cent) of new registrations were women.

The highest amount of new registrations were registered in KwaZulu-Natal (166 112) and Gauteng (156 331) together accounting for nearly half of the new registrations nationally.

Gauteng came second with the highest overall registration activity, with 526 580 people visiting voting stations over the weekend, contributing 17 per cent to the national records.

In Gauteng:

• 156 331 people registered for the first time

• 280 787 people re-registered in a different voting district

• 89 462 people checked and updated their registration details
