Athletes will try again

ALLEN'S NEK – Tough competition results in athletes missing out on SA Championships.

Athletes from Allen Glen High School in Allen’s Nek made their way to the Gauteng High School Athletics Championships at the Germiston Stadium on 4 and 5 March. The goal of this championship was to choose the team that will represent Gauteng in the SA Schools Championships in Bloemfontein from 16 to 18 March.

According to Thabang Ramaboya from the Department of Gauteng Sports, Recreation and Arts and Culture, Gauteng West came in third at the championships in Germiston with 31 medals. Of these, 11 medals were gold, nine were silver and 11 were bronze.

Unfortunately the 11 pupils from Allen Glen could not finish in either first or second place to qualify for the SA Championships, but the school is still very proud of their athletes. Paul Nortje, coach and athletics’ organiser said that the competition was very tough with many South African records broken. “I am proud of them regardless,” said Nortje.

The athletes agreed that the competition was very tight. They said that it was a very good experience and it was a very professional championship. The pupils said that they still have next year to try again.
