‘Racist’ officer set to apologise, two months later

All details not yet confirmed.

An allegedly racist Metro Police officer is set to apologise personally to two victims of a racial slur in January.

The incident transpired outside the Roodepoort Licensing Department at Roodepoort City Hall on 5 January this year. Steven van Eeden intervened when he saw the officer arguing with Dimpie Theron, after she asked him to remove a JMPD vehicle from a designated parking bay for the disabled. Theron was chauffeuring a disabled elderly woman to the department on the day.

The officer allegedly swore at Theron in a rude reaction to her request. Upon Van Eeden intervening, he allegedly called him a “f*cking white a**hole” and told him to take his white tendencies elsewhere. The officer allegedly proceeded to assault Van Eeden, pushing him around.

Assaulted called kaff*r for snarky remark

When a case was registered with the JMPD’s internal affairs on 13 January, the Record was told it will take a while to investigate given the nature of the matter. Now, a full two months later, the Record understands the officer is to apologise personally.

According to Theron, the investigating officer contacted her around two weeks ago to set a date on which the affected parties will be taken to an address in Selby, where the officer will apologise to them personally. She said an official vehicle is to fetch her and transport her to Selby tomorrow morning (Tuesday 8 March), where the meeting is set to take place at 11am. Van Eeden has not yet been available to confirm the meeting.

Both the internal affairs office and JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minnaar have committed to confirming the state of the investigation with the Record, not yet commenting on the above-mentioned apology date.
