Young athlete with big dreams

HONEYDEW – Athlete unfortunately did not qualify for SA championships, but that will not stop him.

So young, but such a bright future ahead of him. Samkelo Dlamini (11), a Grade 5 pupil at Boskop Primary School in Honeydew has proven that he is a worthy athlete to look out for.

Dlamini took represented the district team in the 100m and 150m track event on 20 February at the Ruimsig Stadium. By making excellent times in these events, he qualified to participate in the Gauteng Primary School Athletics Championship on 26 – 27 February in Ruimsig. Dlamini was the only pupil from Boskop Primary to achieve this.

His two athletics coaches, Vanessa Bhima and Machel van den Berg said that they are very proud of him. Bhima was his coach since he started to compete in Grade 1. Dlamini has been part of the Monnas Athletics Club since 2015 and practises at the Ruimsig Athletics Club with coach, Johan Furstenberg. Dlamini said that he would love to be a part of the Olympics team when he is old enough.

“Obviously my hero is Usain Bolt,” he said. Dlamini added that he loves doing athletics as it is a talent that he received from God. “I feel free when I run,” said Dlamini. and

He added that his teachers, Bhima and Van den Berg have been his biggest support. The school gave Dlamini a pair of brand new starting blocks to show him how proud they are of him. His coaches concluded to say that if he continues to work hard, it is very possible for Dlamini to reach his goals.
