Three pupils run their way into nationals

FAIRLAND – Three local pupils earn their place in the SA Championships in Port Elizabeth.

Three pupils from Laerskool Fairland managed to qualify for the South African Primary School Athletics Championships on 11 and 12 March. The pupils had to be placed first or second at the Gauteng Athletics Championships on 26 and 27 February to be a part of the Gauteng team that will be going to Port Elizabeth for the national championships.

Corné de Fouw in Grade 5 was the SA champion in cross country in 2015. He came second at the Gauteng Championships in the 1 200m event. Grade 7 pupil, Chanté Botha came first in the 100m track event and Grade 5 pupil, Euané Theart came first in the 70m hurdles event. All three pupils agreed that they are very excited to participate in the SA Championships.

Johan Kamper, sport manager at the school said that he is very proud of the three athletes. “It was a very difficult competition, but for them to push through and make it into the championships, is great.” Kamper concluded that he wishes the athletes all the best at the nationals and that he has very high expectations of them.
