Charterhouse grows greens

RADIOKOP – Charterhouse Preparatory School pupils get their hands dirty and learn about the environment.

Charterhouse Preparatory School is on a mission to educate their pupils to be environmentally conscious and establish themselves as an ‘Eco-school’.

Charterhouse started their journey with Eco-schools in 2010. The pupils are proud guardians of a vegetable garden, and a recycling project. They also adopted four owlets, who have now settled in the neighbouring area.

Nedbank introduced the school to their veggie tunnel programme in January, taking their vegetable garden to the next level. The Nedbank team assisted the children in the preparation of plastic bags of river sand and the planting of seeds.

Ineshree Naidoo, Renska Conradie and Leandri Schledusch are the teachers involved with the Eco Club that is in charge of the vegetable tunnels. They explained that Charterhouse is involved in the care and harvest of the crops throughout the year and the vegetables are watered twice a day. “The children have had great fun getting their hands dirty,” said Conradie. The school will be contributing the first crop to feeding programmes.
