Two-year-old airlifted after accident

Driver also in critical condition.

A two-year-old boy and an adult was in a critical condition after a head-on collision on Christiaan de Wet Road on Sunday.

Shortly after 8pm paramedics from ER24 were responding to another emergency when they came across the accident scene on one of the bends in the road. They found three occupants in a severely mangled vehicle. One of the occupants was a two-year-old boy. He was in a critical condition and an emergency helicopter was called to airlift him to a Johannesburg hospital.

The driver of the vehicle also was in a critical condition. He was extricated and treated on the scene before rushed off by ambulance to a nearby hospital. The third occupant from the vehicle sustained only minor injuries. When paramedics wanted to assess him, it appeared he had left the scene.

Three women from the other vehicle sustained only minor injuries. They were assessed and treated on the scene.

The exact cause of the collision is not yet known.
