FAQ: How can I get a special vote?

An easy guide to applying for a special vote in the local elections this year.

If you’re immobile due to illness, physically disabled or pregnant, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) sees you as a candidate for the right to a special vote.

Ready, set, register

Some people can’t get to their voting station on election day, either, and the IEC is willing to give them a gap, too. But how does one qualify for and apply for a special vote? The Record found out, just for you.

Why do I want a special vote?

As mentioned above, you’re either immobile due to illness, have a physical disability, are pregnant or are otherwise engaged on election day. Here’s a guideline.

What do I need to apply?

You need to have your green ID book, or smart ID card, or official temporary identification certificate available and be registered to vote.

How do I apply?

Visit the IEC website and fill in the MEC35 form. This form must be hand-delivered to your local IEC office (not a national or provincial office) but it may be submitted on your behalf by someone else.

If I get a special vote, when do I vote?

Special votes are usually cast a day or two before election day, but neither has yet been set by the IEC.

Where do I cast my special vote?

Should you be immobile for any which reason, your special vote is cast at home, where officials will visit you on the predetermined day, ahead of election day. Should you otherwise not be able to reach your voting station on election day, and qualify for a special vote, you’ll vote at your voting station on special vote day, ahead of election day.

Can I check the status of my special vote application?

Of course! You’ll be sent an SMS after the MEC35 form was handed in to acknowledge receipt. Thereafter, you can check your status by sending your ID number via SMS to 32810. Alternatively, you can check your status online.
