REMINDER: Planned power outage

WILGEHEUWEL – Residents are warned about yet another power outage.

City Power Joburg has announced a planned power outage for 24 February.

The areas that will be affected are:

Little Falls, Struben’s Valley, Wilgeheuwel and Hadeco Nursery.

The planned power outage will be from 10pm on 24 February and power will return at 6am on 25 February.

City Power spokesperson Hloni Motloung confirmed that the power outage is planned to do essential maintenance on the network in order to provide consistent service to customers.

This comes after Struben’s Valley, Honeydew, Wilgeheuwel, Allen’s Nek, Radiokop, Honeydew and Laser Park have had their power supply disrupted for lengthy periods since 20 February.

Motloung added, “The power interruptions at Honeydew and Randpark Ridge was due to incidents of cable theft which took place on Monday morning.” He further commented that the technicians worked around the clock to restore the damaged cables before power could be restored at about 11.45am on 24 February.

“The prolonged outage period was as a result of the extensive restoration work that was undertaken by the technicians,” said Motloung.

According to City Power, as a preventative measure, they have also installed protective covers on its infrastructure to prevent theft and vandalism. “In addition, we do regular patrols at the hotspots and conduct sting operations at suspected scrap yard dealers to identify material that cannot be accounted for. However, it is not always practical to monitor its infrastructure around the clock due to its expansive footprint across Johannesburg,” commented Motloung.

City Power urges the communities, who are the eyes and ears of the utility, to report any suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies or to call the 24-hour City Power hotline on 011 490 7553; 011 490 7900; 011 490 7911 or 011 490 7504.
