World Reading Aloud Day calls attention to the importance of reading aloud and sharing stories.

Grab a book, find an audience and read out loud today, 24 February on World Reading Aloud Day.

World Reading Aloud Day calls attention to the importance of reading aloud and sharing stories, motivating children, teenagers and adults worldwide to celebrate the power of words and creating a community of readers taking action to show the world that the right of literacy belongs to all people whether they can read or not.

Reading aloud to children benefits them greatly as it ignites their passion for reading and studies have shown that children who grow up reading grow up smarter. Here are seven ways reading aloud improves and enriches your life:

1. Sharpening focus. When you read aloud you strengthen the connection between your mind and your voice to the full extent , resulting in greater focus and cohesiveness.

2. Increasing vocabulary. When you read words privately you only hear them internally and this limits their effect on you. Reading words aloud, however causes words to become a part of your vocabulary and influence your use of language.

3. Greater comprehension. Reading aloud creates visual and auditory learning and therefore helps material sink in and become ingrained in your brain. This makes it easier to draw on and reference the words in the future.

4. Reading aloud creates an opportunity to play. Reading children’s books aloud to someone you love is not only loads of fun, it also stimulates the creativity of both of you.

5. Exercising the body. Most people make use of their entire bodies when speaking because they express themselves vibrantly through body language.

6. Challenging use of intonation. There is hardly an opportunity to sound dull when you are reading aloud, especially if you have an audience. You can thus use reading aloud as an opportunity to work on your speaking skills and improve your impact of delivery.

7. Improving listening and reading skills. Reading aloud makes you more aware of what you read and hear, especially concerning proper grammar and sentence structure. It also improves the interpretation of what is being said.
