Florida Lake duo unlucky at Dusi

Hopes dashed for FLCC duo.

It was a rough outing for Florida Lake Canoe Club’s paddlers Shaun Maphanga and Melusi Nxumalo when they participated in the FNB Dusi Canoe Marathon.

“Despite dire predictions of low water levels due to drought conditions, and expectations of the toughest Dusi in 60 years, the heavens opened and it rained throughout the three days of the worlds toughest canoe endurance Marathon,” said Gauteng Canoe Union’s Jennie Dallas.

The paddlers started in the A batch of the race and after a highly successful Day 1, the two were placed in the elapsed time starts before the A batch.

“Having started in the A batch, the talented Florida Lake paddlers were confident of a victorious finish, especially having won podium positions in a few races leading up to the Dusi,” said Dallas.

For Day 2, Maphanga and Nxumalo broke their boat and limped to the finish in an eight hour day.

They ended up spending half the night repairing the boat to continue and finish the race on Day 3.

Their overall finish time was 14:11, instead of the expected Sub 10 hour Silver Dusi medal finish time.

This meant they crossed the finish line in position 381 out of 594.boats that finished.
