Green belt a jungle in the concrete jungle

Fifteen months without serious effort from the municipality in Constantia Kloof.

The green belt alongside Christiaan de Wet and Jim Fouché Roads have become more of a jungle over the past couple of months.

Ward councillor for the area, Carl Mann said the municipality is neglecting the area as it did not perform an integrated community outreach programme (iCop) in the area since November 2014. He said that although City Parks and Zoo cut the grass that edges towards the roadway every now and again, the green belt running along the cliff, especially near Wilgerood Road has been neglected and might even have to do with the amount of accidents on the road.

“If trees and bushes that run along a roadway are not pruned regularly, it becomes difficult to see past them and judge the traffic or turn ahead,” he told the Record.

It is also a favourite spot for criminals to hide or to use as an escape route after breaking into houses or vehicles, Mann said.

From talks with the Citizen Relationship and Urban Management (Crum) department of Region C, the Record learned the municipality only plan another iCop in Constantia Kloof for mid-April.

Meanwhile, accidents on the three roads mentioned have been on the increase, to the point where Mann and fellow councillor Suzanne Clarke called on residents to slow down.
