Five local rock songs you have to hear

Local music to brighten up your weekend.

If you haven’t heard these upcoming South African rock/ alternative bands’ new songs, you haven’t lived.

They were recently featured on TeamRock.com as part of a list of 10 South African bands to watch. Some of it might already be familiar to you. Some songs are easy listening compared to others, but they’ll all worth lending your ears to at least once.

Sannie Fox’s Bottle in a Bag

Many refer to her as the new Queen of South African blues and psych rock, but we’ll leave that up to you. Sannie is a Saffa who grew up in London and soaked up a lot of the city’s musical influences. She’s been around a while but only released her debut album in 2015.

One Eight Seven’s Destroy

A punk band from Cape Town that will remind you of Black Flag and the Misfits, this group is not out to set a trend. Rather, they hope to make you think with their powerful, loud messages.

Medicine Boy’s Blue Roses

If you already like Saffa bands like Bye Beneco, this is for you. The two-piece ‘dream noise’ band also hails from Cape Town. Their debut EP was released late in 2014, and they’re currently in studio, working on the next.

Sol Gems’s Standing With the Sun

Sound a lot like The Stellas? Well, the band features some of their former members. They released this single early in 2015 and later opened for Los Angeles’ psychedelic rock four-piece, Allah-Las. They’ll soon be in a venue near you.

Abbey Grange’s Reset Button

If you listen to TuksFM, you might’ve heard this one before. Otherwise, if you’re a regular at Durban venues (which we doubt) you’ve seen them live. This brother-and-sister duo is restarting the city as a hub for quality bands. Cara has the most amazing voice you’ve heard this year. Just saying.
