Dog and cat food urgently needed!

Claw is in desperate need for dog and cat food.

There are many dogs and cats out there who are sick and without homes, Community Led Animal Welfare (Claw) is one organisation that helps with this problem.

The organisation is struggling with the huge amount of animals that need care. “There are so many surrendered dogs, both hospitals are full,” says Cora Bailey from Claw.Tick bite fever is the main concern with all members working as hard as they can to curb the infection.

Cora also says that houses need to be checked to make sure that animals are safe and healthy.

Many people take part in irresponsible practices like breeding puppies to sell so that money can be made to sterilize dogs. It would be more reasonable, she says, to keep the animals locked up and away from other animals until such a time as they can be sterilized. This measure is to make sure that more dogs are not breeding as shelters do not have room for all the animals.

“There are no way homes can be found,” she says regarding the situation, “If each man, woman and child adopted seven dogs each there would still be surplus.”

The situation is dire with three rooms in Durban Deep filled with animals that cannot find homes. “Surrendering your pets is also cruel and irresponsible,” she says.

Most people are not aware how many animals there are and how much they cost. With R1 500 for a sterilization and R300 for a vaccination, the going is not easy.
