It is becoming evident that motorcycle thieves are on the loose in Witpoortjie after another motorcycle was stolen last night in Kasteel Street.
Once again the modus operandi was to poison the home owner’s dog. According to Lelanie de Bod, the mother of the 17-year-old victim, Eben, they woke up this morning to find their beloved Jack Russel dead. Eben’s Honda CBR 125 was also gone. De Bod said it is the second motorcycle theft in a year in their street.
The Record has reported on the trend on numerous occasions this past year and a local resident, who is also a Metro Police officer and the owner of two motorcycles, has expressed his concern over the rise of motorcycle thefts in the area. He believes it is the same people who commit the crimes.
Although the police spokesperson was not available to confirm whether they have noticed a spike in these thefts, West Suburbs Roodepoort Neighbourhood Watch (WSRNW) spokesperson Frik van Zyl said there are an average of four motorcycle thefts a month in Witpoortjie.
De Bod said motorcycle owners must be extra vigilant and asked that residents do not buy suspect motorcycles or motorcycles without the relevant documentation.
