Going for gold

The stadium is big and intimidating.

The D12 athletics championships took place this morning at Roodepoort Athletics Stadium.

Thando Lubisi, Wandile Mwafulirwa and Kayden van Lendt, three winners from Panorama Primary School, sat down with the Record to share their experiences of the day.

Thando, who has been competing in the D12 championships for four years, came third in the high jump, earning him a bronze medal. Wandile went for gold in the high jump, coming first in his category at his second time at the event. Kayden participated in two events: the high jump, where he came second and the long jump where he came fist, missing the record by two centimeters. This is his third year at the championships.

All boys were in agreement with regards to their feelings saying that they were nervous at first but slowly became more and more excited. “I was nervous but when I found out that I nearly broke the record I became excited,” said Kayden.

Many schools compete and there are many children up and about but the boys prefer to stick together on the busy day. “The stadium is big and intimidating,” says Wandile, looking around.

The families and teachers of the boys all support them and feel proud of their achievements. The boys also admit to feeling the pressure to perform in order to make their supporters proud.

The boys will now go on to compete in the Gauteng Championships next week.
