How do you like your almonds?

Raw, salted, candied or in a pie, however you enjoy your almonds, make sure to celebrate National Almond Day on 16 February.

Almonds are rich in Vitamin E, magnesium and fibre, making them one of the more healthy snacks. California is the greatest producer of almonds in the world. Here are some more facts about almond history:

1. Almonds were originally from central and South West Asia where they were used as a staple to help sustain long journeys of nomadic tribes.

2. Nearly every ancient civilization known to man has used almonds, some have even thought of them as sacred.

3. The Bible makes reference to almonds as an object of value and a symbol of hope.

4. Almonds have been revered in art, music and literature since at least biblical times as symbols of beauty, hope and rebirth.

5. Ancient Romans showered newlyweds with almonds at weddings as a fertility charm.

6. North Americans give guests at weddings bags of sugared almonds that represent children, happiness, romance, good health and fortune.
