Happy Nirvana Day!

This day is believed to be the day when Buddha achieved complete Nirvana upon the death of his physical body.

Also called Parinirvana Day, this Mahayana Buddhist holiday falls on 15 February this year.

This day is believed to be the day when Buddha achieved complete Nirvana upon the death of his physical body.

On this day passages are typically read from the Nirvana Sutra, a book describing Buddha’s last days of life. There is also usually meditation observed and visits to Buddhist monasteries and temples.

The day is a time to think of ones own future death and the deaths of loved ones. This thought process reflects Buddhist teachings of impermanence.

The day is also a traditional day of pilgrimage to Kushinaga in India, the town where Buddha was believed to have passed.
