Initiative to take back the lake

Councillor excited about project.

On Thursday 11 February, Florida Lake Users Forum (Fluf) launched their 2016 campaign with the presentation of an innovative, community event branded “Re-Creation of Recreation”.

The focus of “Re-Creation of Recreation” is to put major sporting events together at Florida Lake in order to address the negative perception of the area. Spokesperson Beulah Cloete of the Dragon Boat Club has been extremely successful in putting together Dragon Boat Events and Fluf now want to promote all sporting codes at Florida Lake.

The members of Fluf are committed and will be launching a very ambitious event for Human Rights Weekend, Friday, 18 to Monday, 21 March. The event kicks off on Friday night with a massive street bash, leading into a long weekend of bumper sporting events such as, fishing, Dragon Boating, canoeing, yachting, running, mountain biking and a Sea Scouts exhibition.

Local ward councillor Dave Dewes who attended said he is ecstatic of this brilliant sporting and community initiative and commented, “This could be the best thing that has happened at Florida Lake in the last 20 years, we have never seen this type of collective buy-in from all the sporting codes and surrounding community. I have been advocating for years that only when civil society start standing together in mass will we get things fixed. This event will most definitely portray the massive potential of Florida Lake, not only as a sporting hub, but also as a major recreational attraction. Dewes has also undertaken to get the support of Joburg City Parks and the Sport and Recreation Department of the City.

Fluf is calling on Roodepoort residents and businesses in the area to demonstrate the fact that it is our human right to have safe and attractive parks. The only way this event will be a success is if the West Rand community participate in mass in a revolt against, crime, degradation and urban decay. Fluf will ensure the collective participation of the Police, Metro Police, local security companies and the Sector Two Policing Forum is involved in the project
