Cheap and Free Places To Go This Valentine’s Day

Valentine's Day can be romantic and cheap.

One of the major arguments against Valentine’s Day is that it’s just a corporate scam trying to get you to spend loads of unnecessary money.

Valentine’s Day can be expensive. With all the extra trinkets and gifts to buy and inflated prices, it’s difficult not to spend money you don’t have on things you don’t need. Here are a few ways you can still have a special day with your significant other and spend minimal money.

1. Have a picnic. Instead of spending money at a fancy restaurant have in intimate indoor picnic instead. If you’re in the mood for going out you can go to the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden’s Valentine’s Day Picnic. It doesn’t cost much money and it’s an event even the kids will enjoy. You can book tickets at www.webtickets.co.za.

2. Another alternative to an expensive restaurant meal is to dine in. Have a romantic home-cooked dinner and then go out somewhere fancy for dessert or cocktails. You’ll spend a lot less money and you and your partner can have a romantic time cooking together.

3. Have a stay-in night. Load up on your favourite snack foods and spend the night snuggling and binge watching a new TV series.

4. For those still young at heart, try staying in and playing video games. It will cost nothing and will be loads of fun with many memories made. It may even bring out your competitive side and you and your love can play a game seeing who wins most often, the winner can get the loser to do whatever he/she wants.

5. Have a karaoke night. Go to local bars or pubs and see which are holding karaoke nights. You can even play karaoke at home with your friends. You’ll have loads of fun for minimal cost and you can include the whole family or have a group date with your friends.

6. Make a romantic playlist with songs that remind you and your partner of milestones in your relationship, then get dressed up like you’re going out dancing and spend the evening dancing in your living room or garden. Nothing is more romantic than slow-dancing to a special song with the one you love, especially when you don’t have to pay to do it.

7. Go old-school and have a date with no electronics. Switch off your TV, phone, tablet and computer, light some candles and enjoy some quality time together talking, holding hands and whispering sweet nothing in each other’s ears.

8. Recreate your first date. You can even try spending the day recreating all your favourite dates together. Have fun, be romantic and take lots of pictures.

9. Try looking for a Groupon (South Africa), to go to a spa or book into a hotel for the night. You’ll spend way less than the normal price.

10. Pretend it’s winter and go ice skating at a mall where there is an ice-rink. You won’t spend much money and you can have a super romantic time together holding hands and skating away.

Whatever you choose to do this Valentine’s Day make it special and don’t become hung-up on how much you’re spending. You can have a great time on any budget. Money means little compared to spending time with the one you love.
