MMC supplies wheels for disabled

MMC visits clinic and donates two wheelchairs to persons with disabilities.

Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for health and social development Nonceba Molwele visited the Sol Plaatje Clinic yesterday.

This was to handover two wheelchairs to persons with disabilities along with food parcels.

She was accompanied by Ward 127 Councillor Sabelo Ngcana, ANC Zone 5 chairperson Phosane Mngqibisa and Persons With Disabilities’ (PWD) Nero Maseko.

“The request was made to my department to provide wheelchairs for those who cannot move around as easily without a wheelchair. I heard about some have to borrow wheelchairs to visit the clinic. So we looked around for people who could sponsor us with wheelchairs as we received a request for four. However, we could only bring two as the rest were late in being delivered,” said Molwele.

The MMC also pleaded with the community which braved the scorching heat to assist and protect persons with disabilities.

“There are so many horror stories, how those who are supposed to care for them are the ones who rape them and hurt them. They are left without food. These are people, just like you and me, created by God. We cannot harm them,” she said.

The first beneficiary of the wheelchair was Sipho Bhengu, a pensioner who cannot move without a wheelchair.

Bhengu was tearful as he was assisted into his new wheelchair and profusely thanked the leaders for assisting him.

The next recipient was 28-year-old Boyboy Nogxotha who disabled and needs constant care.

His mother who was taking care of him recently died and is now living with his sister who has a tough time taking care of him.
