Research before you adopt a pet

MARAISBURG – Pets are up for adoption at the Roodepoort SPCA but there are steps to follow before.

For residents interested in adopting pets from the Roodepoort SPCA, there are about 20 dogs available.

The SPCA adoption receptionist Michelle Kok said 25 dogs have already been adopted and waiting to go to their new homes while over 20 are still available.

Kok explained that there are a number of steps before adopting.

“Before adopting, research the breed you are interested in and always remember your pets are for life, not just until the novelty wears off,” she said.

She added that you also need to know who will take care of the animal when you go away and also, can you afford the services of a private veterinarian?

The procedures and requirements when adopting a new family pet:

  • Once you have chosen a cat or a dog, a pre-home application is to be completed by the person adopting the animal and you must be over 18.
  • A fee of R100 is to be paid, this is for the inspectors to visit your property and to do a property inspection.
  • Once pre-home inspection is approved, you have to personally come into the SPCA and complete the adoption contract.
  • Your new pet will be sterilised and all the veterinary checks and procedures will be done.
  • The entire process take about four to five days.

The following paperwork is required before you may take your pet home: a proof of residence, copy of ID book and if you reside in a complex, proof that animals are allowed.

Kok explained that all animals on your property are to be sterilised before a pre-home application is approved.

“You may be required to bring your existing dogs into the SPCA to meet the new dog,” she said.

She added that the adoption fee for a dog or puppy is R600, R400 for a cat and a kitten under six months is R500.

Kok explained that the pet will receive their first vaccination, deworming and rabies injection, a microchip, sterilisation, a collar and an ID disk.

“Before bringing home a new pet, you will require: water bowl, food bowl, good quality food, collar, lead, bed and kennel,” she added.
