Another Pikitup strike commences

Pikitup undergoing second round of illegal strike action in three months.

Residents should ready themselves for more discomfort in service disruptions thanks to Pikitup employees who embarked on an illegal strike.

The City of Johannesburg’s waste management company, Pikitup, today confirmed it is experiencing service delivery disruptions due to its employees, those who are affiliated to the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu), embarking on an “illegal work stoppage”.

“This illegal work stoppage will affect refuse collections in all the regions of CoJ,” Pansy Oyedele, Pikitup communications manager in a press statement said.

“We therefore appeal to residents and business owners to bear with us and to contribute to leave their bins and excess waste inside their yards until further notice.”

Pikitup said the disruptions greatly concern them and CoJ but also business owners and most importantly, the community. It said its board, management and the city condemns the unlawful actions of Samwu.

“Every effort is being made to speedily address this unsolicited work stoppage.”

This after, earlier in the week, residents in Roodekrans and Hamberg complained Pikitup never collected waste from their areas over the previous weekend. Roodepoort depot manager Stella Wilson explained a “series of breakdowns” caused the delay in service delivery. The depot picked up the slack by Tuesday evening but will again be troubled by the strike from today onward.

The Record will update the story as it develops.
