Athletics Day at AMS

Arthur Matthews Primary School's athletics meet.

It was a lively day at Arthur Matthews Primary School as the entire school participated in their annual Inter-house Athletics (26 January).

The excitement was tangible as pupils, staff and parents joined in with gusto in this long-awaited day with their new principal George Solomons.

From the diminutive Grade R learners to the Grade 7’s,the competitive spirit was running high as the three teams, the Hawks, the Falcons and the Harriers, vied for victory.

Grade 6 pupil Ime Okon stole the show by winning the 100, 150 and 1200-metre races.

Last year he won all his events at the D12 athletics which were the 100, 120-metres races and the long jump.

His brother, Udeme and his sister, Mercy also maintain a perfect record in their events.

Staff member Wendy Mathebula’s unique and vibrant style of announcing contributed substantially towards the success of the day.

Together with Solomons who perfected his own brand of announcing, they made a formidable team.

The highlight of the day was the parents-versus-staff race.

The Harriers defeated the other teams with an impressive score of 287 against 130 (Falcons) and 137 (Hawks).
