Musician living his dream

Musician relaises long dream of releasing music

Musa Ngobeni is a local singer, songwriter and percussionist.

Known by his stage name Musique, the Florida resident has just released a single called ‘Zi ryt iGalz’ (translated to mean: Are the girls alright). The song is a fusion of RnB, Hip Hop and Afrosoul.

Ngobeni started singing in a local choir at 13-year-old. Along with his brother Semitonez who helped him produce his single, Ngobeni went onto start boy bands and perform in local events.

“Singing became a hobby and naturally as my brother and I started boy bands we would pick up instruments. That’s where I learned. A year later I wrote my first song,” he said.

Although music was his passion, Ngobeni did not give up his studies. He studied Journalism at the University of Johannesburg but still found time for music.

“I would sneak out of res and would join my brother in studio. At that time he was into sound engineering so he was busy in the recording studio. I stuck with school until I graduated,” he said.

Ngobeni adds that beeing in a studio was a new experience for him.

“I was used to performing live so being in a studio was different. It’s so controlled and someone tells you what to do. Performing live you have so much freedom. It was a lot to get used to,” he said.

In 2010, Musique helped Choppa with his album supplying vocals and writing numerous tracks on the album.

“I would write the songs which gave me the chance to hone my skills a bit more. Choppa would then add his own vibe to the songs,” said Ngobeni.

With extensive experience as a backing vocalist, Ngobeni decided make his move and work on his own solo project.

“The music industry has moved from bands and has become more individualistic. RnB and Hip Hop are the biggest genres right now. So I wanted to lend my voice and introduce a new fusion sound. My brand of music is authentic and I don’t lose my Tsonga heritage,” he said.
