JRA hears plea on troublesome intersection

Barriers to be extended on road rife with accidents and speedsters.

Barriers are to be extended and extra sharp curve chevrons installed on Albertina Sisulu (previously Kathleen) Road following residents’ complaints about regular accidents.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) have heard residents’ pleas regarding a busy intersection, where many collisions have taken place over the years, many of the vehicles crashing into surrounding properties’ walls, in one case even into the townhouse itself. Speeding is a persistant problem on this road.

The response came after the Record did an initial article with resident Maria Botha, who had to cover R70 000 in damages after another such accident broke down her property’s walls and did damage to the townhouse building. Aspirant DA councillor in Florida, Caleb Finn, assisted her in getting the complaint lodged with the JRA.

This morning (27 January) JRA spokesperson Bertha Scheepers confirmed an initial inspection had been completed at the intersection. Inspectors gave feedback to the regional depot about the matter.

“The regional depot has been requested to repair the existing guard rail on the curb and to extend it with another five meters towards the intersection [where no barrier exists at current],” Scheepers said.

“In addition, sharp curve chevrons will be installed to warn motorists about the upcoming bend in addition to the chevrons that already exist in the opposite direction [towards Maraisburg].

“We trust this will assist in ensuring the safety of road users and residents,” she said.

Upon hearing the news, Botha said, “Praise the Lord”.

“Thank you to the JRA, to Caleb Finn and to the journalist who highlighted our issue.”

She said she is still concerned about her property and would appreciate an extra barrier installed on the property’s edge, but this is to be considered and determined by the JRA.

The upgrades should take around two weeks to complete.
