WELTEVREDEN PARK – Weltevreden Park Primary School collects water for those affected by the drought.

Weltevreden Park Primary School collected water for drought-stricken areas in parts of the country on 22 January and the children went above and beyond.

The water drive started on 21 January when the Grade 1s, 2s and 3s were asked to bring water for parts of the country that suffer heavily from drought. The pupils did not disappoint and they came with bottles of water to show they were eager to support the plight of those suffering through the heat.

The water would from here on be collected through the week and on Fridays be driven to a central point where the water would be taken by truck to the Free State. When asked how it came about that the school started collecting the water, Gill Bridge, a teacher at Weltevreden Park Primary School for the past 24 years, said that they were inspired by all the others who were collecting water.

“We saw that other schools were collecting water and we thought that we should join the good cause too,” said Bridge. “Plus, I thought that our school would far surpass any of the other schools who were also collecting water.”

The school is also known for its great charity work, such as the Tuesday Charity held last year. Through this initiative, the school was able to raise about R100 000 for charity, teaching children to give back to those less fortunate than them.
