Drough-stricken Free State touches Welridge Academy pupils

WELTEVREDEN PARK – Little pupils touched by the Free State drought situation pledge to start donating water.

Welridge Academy pupils in Weltevreden Park reached out to the needy Free State province community.

The Academy is now asking all the Roodepoort residents to drop off their empty bottles at the school after using them.

The little pupils together with their teachers came together on 22 January and pledged to assist the drought-stricken community by donating water every week.

The caring pupils brought used empty plastic bottles to the school from their homes.

PA to the principal, Margaux Needham, said they were planning to do this every week.

“We are going to fill these empty bottles with water and send it to the affected Free State communities. This is our donation,” she said.

Needham said the filled bottles are sent to the Village at Horizon in Roodepoort, then transported to the province from there.

The drought is considered to be one of country’s worst since 1982.

The school is calling on all residents and business people to assists with empty bottles.

Needhan said they decided to help after learning about the dire situation in the province.

The school is planning to launch an outreach programme using Facebook and their website to draw their local communities’ attention.
