Card cloning criminal on the prowl

The man's modus operandi allegedly is to use some kind of cloning device on the ATM.

A pensioner and her daughter have been scammed at ATMs by the same criminal – not once, but three times.

The mother, who asked to stay anonymous out of fear of being targeted, said the first incident was at a garage at the corner of Clarendon Drive and Mitchell Street. The man’s modus operandi allegedly is to use some kind of cloning device on the ATM. When the victim inserts his or her card it gets “swallowed” by the machine. The man will approach saying he works for the bank and he will help. Then the card is cloned somehow.

The same man allegedly scammed the woman again at the Absa ATM in Anstruther Street in Discovery last August. In December it was her daughter’s turn to fall prey to the man at the same ATM. They believe this is a favourite location for him to commit his crimes.

The suspect is a tall, big man with a dark complexion and drives either a red Toyota Tazz or Mazda. He also has been seen in a white vehicle. In all three cases, according to the victims, he had a passenger. An employee at a business in the same street confirmed that it happens regularly at the ATM in question and that they had seen the suspect on occasion. According to the employee and the victims the man is very swift and skilled when committing the crime.
