GALLERY: Donate water to those in need

JOBURG – Water is collected across the country to support those affected by the recent drought.

Residents from across Joburg are collecting water for the NGO Operation Hydrate.

The initiative has been developed to assist farmers affected by the current drought, such as Senekal and QwaQwa in the Free State.

Community members have been urged to take bottled water or tap water in containers to various collection points across Joburg.

The thousands of litres of water will be distributed among farmers and areas affected by the drought.

On 14 January the NGO announced the next beneficiary will be Swartruggens in the North West.

Randpark resident Corinna Tannian has opened her home to the public as a drop-off point and said she finds it heartbreaking to see how farmers, their employees and their animals are suffering so she is determined to help.

Tannian said it has been amazing to see how many members of the community have been participating in the campaign to gather water for those in need.

Curves in Struben’ Valley is a designated drop-off point where water can be dropped off from Monday to Friday from 5.30 am untill 7pm and on Saturdays from 6.30 am until 10.30.

Sealed, bottled water or containers filled with tap water can be dropped off. Tap water must be marked TW.

The community has reacted greatly on Twitter with tweets such as:

“Thank you @Shoprite_SA for the transport- We are loading 4 trucks for Swartruggens tomorrow”, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much”, “Our nation, with a common goal, living the Madiba Legacy” and “Water being transported deep into the rural areas near Aliwal North”.
