Vigil held for slain councillor

“My father was a brave man who served his community diligently and with great compassion,” Pamela Khosa, 23, told the Record.

Last night (Wednesday 13 January) the family and members of the ANC held a vigil for slain councillor Siphiwe Zulu, 52, at the family home in Witpoortjie where Pamela’s two younger sisters Buhle and Olwethu and mother Sizwile still reside.

Murder case opened after councillor shot dead

Were he allowed to continue with his work, given the local elections this year, Siphiwe would most likely have served his third term as councillor in Ward 51 in Zola, Soweto.

According to Pamela, in the morning hours of 31 December her father returned home from Soweto at around 2am when a neighbour warned him he saw five men in their yard. After circling the area a few times before entering his driveway, Siphiwe was cornered while he was locking the gate behind him and shot in the torso.

Their tenants helped Sizwile to get her injured husband to Leratong Hospital but this, unfortunately, did not save his life. Pamela suspects the bullet injured his nerves as he had fits in hospital which was fatal. Siphiwe passed away on 1 January.

The family had around 300 people at the vigil at the house and will today go on to witness how around 3 000 people, many from the Zola community, come to pay final respects to Siphiwe Zulu at his funeral service at the Zola Sports Complex. Speaker of the national assembly, Baleka Mbete and mayor of Johannesburg, Parks Tau attended the vigil, among members of the ANC and ANC Women’s League (ANCWL).
