VIDEO: Sewage overflows in complex

HONEYDEW RIDGE– Residents are inconvenienced due to a sewage leak for the past three days.

Concerned resident from Honeydew Ridge, Suzaan Bezuidenhout noticed that the grass in her backyard was wet on 4 January, near where a manhole is located. By the next morning the whole backyard was flooded with sewage.

Liz van der Merwe is frustrated with the damage the sewage leak is causing on her property.

Bezuidenhout called a plumber to assist with the sewage leak but he didn’t manage to fix it. The sewage leak then spread to a neighbour’s house.

Chairperson of Tsumeb complex and resident Liz van der Merwe was also alarmed when she discovered sewage flowing in her backyard. “In the 13 years I’ve been a resident I have experienced a sewage leak but never to this extent,” said Van der Merwe.

Joburg Water attended to the sewage leak on 7 January, and fixed the problem.

“We could not open our windows, doors due to the horrible smell or wash the dishes and flush toilets. It’s a a major inconvenience and we just want to be taken seriously when we lodge serious complaints with the municipalities and our ward councillors,” said Van der Merwe.

Ward 97 Councillor Jaco Engelbrecht said that he was made aware of the sewage leak on 6 January. ” Residents should initially lodge a complaint with Joburg Water and get a reference number. If the problem is not fixed, then residents can lodge a complaint through me, then I will escalate this matter to the relevant parties,” said Engelbrecht.
