The Roodepoort SPCA experienced an influx of surrendered or stray animals this festive season.
However, residents can help by providing some of these animals a loving family and home. Pets are available for adoption at the SPCA.
To adopt a pet, all a person needs to do is to visit the kennels and choose a pet.
Then an application form is filled by the prospective owner along with a valid South African ID or driving license, which costs R100.
SPCA inspectors are sent to an applicant’s home to make certain that it is suitable for the animal they want to take home.
If a prospective owner lives in a complex, they must provide a letter from the corporate board.
Inspectors will inspect the yard for space, check if there is shelter, food and water available for the pet.
If the inspection is successful, the remaining fee is expected to be paid before the pet is turned over.
To adopt a dog costs R600, a kitten is R550 and a cat R400. The fee includes sterilisation, first vaccination, rabies vaccination and deworming of the animal, along with a microchip and ID tag.
The SPCA do not allow animals to go to inadequately fenced or walled properties and gates must also be of adequate height and structure to prevent a dog from wandering into the street.
Chaining of a dog will immediately disqualify an applicant from adopting a dog.
