JMPD Festive operations a success

Decrease in unlawful behaviour leads to peaceful festive celebrations.

“Festivities marking the dawn of the New Year went off without major unlawful incidents,” are the words from the City of Johannesburg.

Member of the Mayoral Committee for Public Safety, Councillor Sello Lemao attributed the success to the joint operations carried out by the JMPD, SAPS, EMS and Disaster Management Services throughout the city.

He also pointed to an improvement in public behaviour for the low number of unlawful incidents.

“This is very encouraging for the city though we believe much more can be done by all of us to reduce road fatalities, drowning and fires,” he said.

JMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said joint operations over the years have seen a reduction in major incidences in the city, especially during New Year’s Day celebrations.

Despite this general improvement, several arrests were made for a variety of offences. On New Years Eve 12 motorists were arrested for drunk driving..

Roodepoort Parks such as Florida Lake and Little Falls were also heavily patrolled on New Year’s Day to ensure by-law compliance and improved safety and security for all park users.

Lemao commended JMPD officers for their tireless dedication over the festive season.
