Children go back to school

JOBURG – ER24 urges parents to make sure children go back to school safely.

ER24 urged parents and children who are preparing for the re-opening of schools to keep in mind their safety and health.

The ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing said children should be vigilant at all times.

She said if children walk to and back home from school, they should try to do so in a group.

“Never walk through secluded areas. If you see someone behaving suspiciously, get away from the person immediately and report the incident,” said Bodasing..

She said children should ensure that valuables such as cellular phones and other electronic devices are not visible.

She added, “Know the rules of the road, do not jaywalk and always cross roads where you are allowed to but ensure that it is safe to do so.”

She advised children to never accept or ask a stranger for a lift.

“Leave home early enough to ensure that you are at school on time.” she said.

For those who are dropped off and picked up from school, parents should ensure this is done safely.

“Children must be appropriately restrained in a vehicle and parents should ensure that lift clubs or any other form of transport organised for children, is safe” she said.

Knowing who is transporting your child is important.

“A child should always keep a list of emergency numbers to contact in case it is needed,” she explained.

She also said it is important to check the health of a child.

“Make sure children live a balanced lifestyle by eating healthy, getting enough rest, sleep and exercise to reduce stress,” she said.

If you are a victim of bullying, any other form of abuse at home or school, struggling to cope mentally, seek help from a trusted person such as a parent, counsellor, teacher or principal.
