How to make your staycation feel like a real getaway

Set a few ground rules, for your own good.

Even if you’re staying at home this festive season, you can make your staycation feel like a real holiday.
The bad news is some ground rules will have to be set. The good news is the family will relax as if you’re all lying on the beach and getting a good tan.

Consider implementing all or some of the following:
• No smart phone
• No email
• No computer, video games or internet
• No last-minute working at home
• No worrying about anything
• No fighting
• No cooking, or minimal cooking
• No cleaning
• No laundry
• No independent plans, it’s family time!

Some sound harsh but take into consideration what you won’t normally put up with while you’re on holiday. Things like serious cleaning or laundry can be done once your staycation is officially over. Allow a day or two between your staycation and the day you start work again to get the chores out of the way and start the new year afresh.

Plan your fun
Set a start day and finish day for your staycation, just like you’ll have with a getaway. Make a calendar and decide what you’re willing to spend for the duration of your time off.

Set money aside for activities, takeout or a splurge or two. Consider treating yourself to some domestic help to clean up once the holiday is over. Hold a family meeting and hear what everyone wants to do to relax, and plan the calendar accordingly.

Consider spending time preparing your home and kitchen to make things as easy — and neat — as possible for your relaxation period. Gather takeout menus or plan a freezer cooking session ahead of time. Using disposable dishes and cups will help cut down on cleaning afterwards.

Clean the house as a family before the staycation officially starts.
