Suspect arrested in Roodepoort rape case

Items stolen from the victim found in arrested suspect's possession.

On Monday evening (21 December) the Krugersdorp Police’s Family and Child Safety (FCS) Unit made a breakthrough in the Ruimsig rape case by arresting a 19-year-old suspect in Krugersdorp West.

They had help from the Gauteng Provincial Investigating Unit and Krugersdorp Trio Task Team.

The suspect was arrested in connection with a case where a 29-year-old woman was allegedly hijacked in Cradlestone Mall’s parking area on Thursday 17 December. The alleged rapist then drove her to a gravel road in the Ruimsig area and the rape allegedly took place. He then instructed her to leave the vehicle and fled the scene in it.

“Members worked around the clock and followed up all possible leads,” Krugersdorp Cluster spokesperson Appel Ernst said.

“Through investigation and the skills of seasoned investigators such as Warrant Officer Odendaal contributed to the success.”

The hijacked vehicle was recovered after it was found abandoned in the Krugersdorp West area on Sunday morning 20 December. Forensic experts found various exhibits in the vehicle which aided the investigation. The team’s tireless efforts eventually led them to a house in Krugersdorp West where the 19-year-old was arrested.

“Various items which were taken from the victim, were found in his position and police could also positively link him to the scene of the rape,” Ernst said.

Cluster commander Major General Anna Mateisi commended the involved police members for their efforts, determination, perseverance and gusto in solving the case, which include; Warrant Officers Odendaal and Van Rensburg of the provincial investigating unit, Captain Terblanche, Warrant Officer Nel and Sergeant Coetzee of Krugersdorp FCS and Captain van der Heever and Warrant Officers Drosky, Bester and Borman of the Krugersdorp trio task team.
